Utah Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (UCAN)

ABOUT

The Utah Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons is a 501c3 organization, founded in 2007. They are a collection of concerned citizens calling for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. UCAN works to encourage civic action, promote public discussion, and build public awareness of the continuing danger of nuclear weapons. In addition to public outreach work, UCAN holds bi-monthly meetings.

CURRENT WORK

  • Working to introduce anti-nuclear weapons resolutions in other cities and counties in Utah, especially Salt Lake County.

  • Creating and implementing a comprehensive lobbying strategy with Utah members of Congress, led by local advocacy teams. Their lobby work focuses on legislative issues such as No First Use, Presidential Sole Authority, the Back from the Brink policy steps, and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear weapons.

  • Continuing to hold regular meetings and annual events, and working to collaborate with new communities in their work, such as with indigenous communities for their annual downwinders event.

SUCCESSES

  • 2019: Unanimously passing a resolution in the Salt Lake City Council in support of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

  • 2013: Organizing a performance of Richard Rhodes’ REYKJAVIK in Salt Lake City, followed by a discussion with Richard Rhodes himself.

  • 2010: Supporting a resolution that passed unanimously in the Utah House of Representatives in support of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

  • Organizing numerous speaking events with out of state guests including Rick Wayman, Kevin Martin, Ward Wilson, Susie Snyder, and others.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLABORATION

  • Working with national groups to organize a high profile speaking tour, to help raise awareness in the community and help build relationships with new partners.

  • Continuing to collaborate with national groups for projects like media coverage, educational materials, lobbying work, and events.

  • For example, UCAN recently collaborated with experts at the Princeton Science and Global Security Program on an Op-Ed about the new Ground Based Strategic Deterrent and the related production facility in Utah.
